EU Approves Miskolc Tram Project

The European Commission has approved Hungary's priority project to renovate the tram network in Miskolc (NE Hungary), the National Development Agency announced on March 19.

The project involves the renovation of 19 kilometers of tram line and laying 2.8 kilometers of new line, replacing the city's 40-year-old trams with 31 modern, low-floor vehicles and building 45 tram stops. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
Miskolc will receive HUF 34 billion in state and EU development funding for the HUF 38 billion project.
Hungary has designated forty priority projects, 22 of which have received the government's approval. The EU has approved two of 19 submitted projects, both of them tram line renovations.
