Real Earnings Fell by 6.9 pct in January

Real earnings in January fell by 6.9 pct compared to January 2008, paralleled by a 3.1 pct increase of the consumer price index. The average number of employees was 2 million 687 thousand in January 2009.

The average gross and net earnings in corporations employing at least 5 persons and in budgetary institutions decreased by 5.2 pct and 4.0 pct, respectively, compared to the same month of the previous year.
In January 2009, some 1 million 894 thousand people worked in the private sector and 707 thousand in the public sector. The staff number in the observed economic units and budgetary institutions became by 2.5 pct less than one year before.
Average gross nominal earnings of full-time employees amounted to HUF 194,500, while those of full-time employees at corporations were equal to HUF 187,600. The average gross earnings in budgetary institutions was HUF 214,800.. Average gross nominal earnings (including premiums, and one-month bonus) fell by 5.2 pct compared to the same period of the previous year.
