2009 Proves one of the Hardest Periods for Domestic Tourism

For the domestic tourism industry, and especially for Budapest, 2009 proved to be one of the hardest periods in a long time.

According to the Budapest Tourist Office, due to the effects of the global financial crisis, which were increasingly felt after the end of 2008, the number of tourist nights spent in Budapest fell by 11.1pct within a single year. Accommodation facility revenues also dropped, by 15.7pct.
Based on the available data, Budapest outperformed neighboring capitals, expect for Vienna. Prague (-11.4pct), Tallinn (-14.9pct), Bratislava (-20,3pct), Ljubljana (-16pct) and Lisbon (-10,9pct) suffered a similar drop in the number of tourist nights.
